Federal agents confiscate 4,359 guns headed to Mexico during the Trump administration

Federal Agents Seize Over 36,000 Illegal Firearms

Since President Trump took office, authorities have confiscated over 36,000 illegal guns, including thousands meant for Mexico, as per new figures from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

Alongside the firearms, more than 2.3 million rounds of ammunition were also seized. The ATF stated that these items were mostly sourced from gang members and international criminal organizations. This announcement seems to represent a shift from the previous administration’s focus areas, including “ghost guns” and other regulatory priorities.

The Trump administration’s focus remains on tackling street crime, gang violence, and drug cartels. ATF Deputy Director Robert Secada emphasized that the agency is actively working to disrupt a complex web of domestic and international criminal organizations involved in illegal firearm trafficking.

Secada stated, “Illegal crime guns are spilling out from every state across the nation. This issue isn’t confined to the southwestern border; it’s a national threat.” He further noted that ATF agents are concentrating on gangs and cartels that turn American streets into crime scenes.

The report highlighted the seizure of 4,359 firearms and over 648,000 rounds of ammunition that were on their way to Mexico, where they could have potentially equipped gangs and drug traffickers.

These statistics not only shed light on the prevalence of gun trafficking but also underscore the ATF’s role in investigating such crimes and confiscating firearms from unauthorized individuals.

ATF agents employ ballistics tracing and DNA evidence to trace the origins of weapons, with hopes of mapping out the gun supply chain and identifying those behind these activities. Typically, seized firearms are either returned to their lawful owners or destroyed.

This recent increase in seizures happens amid ongoing discussions about how the administration balances enforcement duties with Second Amendment rights.

It’s worth noting that the Trump administration has faced backlash from gun rights advocates recently, particularly after officials justified the killing of a Minnesota man by immigration agents, citing he legally possessed a firearm. Additionally, U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro’s stern warning that anyone bringing guns into D.C. would face jail time sparked controversy, especially among Second Amendment supporters like Rep. Greg Steube (R-Fla.), who claimed he brings firearms into the city every week with a valid permit.

The ATF reiterated that their focus lies not on legal gun ownership but on identifying traffickers supplying firearms to gangs, drug cartels, undocumented individuals, terrorist groups, and others prohibited from legal gun ownership.
