Federal Funding Is a Privilege, Not a Right

Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that college presidents need to know that federal funding is a privilege, not a right.

Host Kristen Welker said, “I want to start with the protests that we’ve seen on college campuses across the country. I know some universities have called in police reinforcements. I think that’s the right thing to do. Do you respect the right of people who are peacefully protesting?”

Scott said, “We certainly respect the right to peaceful protest. Too often what we see on college campuses is not peaceful protest. There’s a reason why there are more than 2,000 arrests and detentions on college campuses. It’s because people are being beaten, vandalizing, and breaking into buildings. What has to be said is that the anti-Semitism we see today is similar to what it was in the 1960s.”

He added, “The American people have made it clear that they support eliminating anti-Semitism from college campuses. They have said it very clearly: There is no room for hate in America. It’s clear. What hasn’t been said is why it took so long for President Biden to get in front of the microphone and denounce anti-Semitism, in part because his base has told him so. Because he refuses to fight anti-Semitism for equity, he panders to politics. , federal funding is a privilege, not a right. Every Jewish child has the right to walk safely to class. It’s about studying in peace in the library. We need to make sure every student feels that sense of security on every campus in America.”
