Federal Investigation of Nonprofits Linked to Jennifer Siebel Newsom
Federal authorities are reportedly looking into nonprofits associated with California’s first lady, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, which has led to increased scrutiny of two organizations facing criticism for potential conflict of interest due to their connection to Governor Gavin Newsom.
Newsom has suggested that the Justice Department under President Donald Trump is pursuing a politically charged investigation against him and his wife. However, the Justice Department has not confirmed any investigation publicly. As this inquiry unfolds, questions about the Siebel Newsom-linked nonprofits, The Representation Project (TRP) and California Partners Project (TCPP), are resurfacing. Both nonprofits receive funding from corporations, tribes, and various interest groups with interests before the state government.
Gavin Newsom has labeled the investigation as a “political witch hunt,” even as unnamed sources have indicated to news outlets that an investigation is indeed taking place. Recently, reports emerged suggesting that the FBI is also examining Jennifer Siebel Newsom’s tax matters.
Caitlin Sutherland, the executive director of Americans for Public Trust, remarked on the concerning nature of financial flows and the timing of government actions, stating, “It is past time for this cash flow to be subject to intense scrutiny.” This statement came in July 2025 when sources pointed to the investigation’s inception.
Political Allegations and Increased Scrutiny
The investigation has heightened scrutiny toward Siebel Newsom’s financial dealings, particularly after a 2021 report from the Sacramento Bee highlighted that her charity, TRP, received over $800,000 from corporations that frequently lobby the state. Many of these donors were later favored by Newsom’s administration.
Interestingly, the charity’s income appears to have surged alongside Newsom’s political ascent between 2011 and 2019. For example, Siebel Newsom draws a salary exceeding $160,000 from TRP and also channels significant payments to a media production company she owns.
The governor has claimed that the probe involves inquiries about those close to his wife, asserting that it’s a politically motivated “fishing expedition” aimed at undermining them as he considers a run for president. The Justice Department, meanwhile, has not publicly confirmed the investigation’s details, although informants have suggested it originated from a whistleblower complaint rather than being initiated at higher levels within the department.
Concerns Over Donor Influence
There have been various allegations regarding connections between donor contributions to Siebel Newsom’s nonprofits and favorable outcomes from the state’s administrative efforts. For instance, prior to opposing a casino development, Newsom solicited substantial donations from American Indian tribes to TCPP. This chain of events has raised eyebrows and led some to label it as a “play-for-play” scenario, even though the tribes assert that their contributions were motivated solely by the nonprofits’ missions.
This scrutiny has expanded to include allegations of self-dealing, wherein films produced by Siebel Newsom are shown in public schools, arguably benefiting the Newsom family financially. Still, Siebel Newsom’s organizations have denied any inappropriate linkage between donations and state actions.
Summary and Ongoing Investigations
In a climate of considerable public interest and criticism, the relationships between California state actions, donor financial contributions, and the workings of Siebel Newsom’s nonprofits remain under a microscope. As the current investigation potentially unfolds, California’s leadership hopes to clear the air regarding these complex allegations.
Despite the growing number of accusations, Newsom has firmly stated that there’s “no correlation” between his family’s nonprofit donations and state policies. “Absolutely none,” he insists, emphasizing that such decisions stem from policy priorities rather than personal benefits.
For now, the various entities involved, including TRP, TCPP, and the governor’s office, have refrained from commenting further on the matter.
