Federal Judge Blocks Illinois ‘Assault Weapons’ Ban

A federal judge in the Southern District of Illinois on Friday issued a permanent injunction preventing the state from enforcing the “assault weapons” ban contained in the Illinois Community Protection Act (PICA).

Plaintiffs in the case also included the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF). SAF founder Alan Gottlieb reacted to the decision, calling Friday “a great day for gun rights.”

The judge's order gives the state 30 days to file an appeal before the injunction goes into effect.

Breitbart News reported that Illinois Governor JB Pritzker (D) signed an “assault weapons” ban on January 10, 2023.

The ban faced immediate backlash from law enforcement, with sheriffs in 80 counties making it clear they would not enforce the ban.
