FedEx Cargo Plane Catches Fire in Midair After Bird Strike

A FedEx cargo plane set off a fire after taking off from Newar Liberty International Airport and attacking a bird in the air on Saturday.

FedEx Flight 3609 was on its way to Indianapolis when the incident happened, NBC News It has been reported.

Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) officials said the aircraft hit a bird on departure, damaging one of the engines of the Boeing 767.

In a statement, FedEx told NBC that its crews declared a state of emergency and returned to the airport safely, noting that the company is grateful for the “quick action” of its crew and first responders on-site.

The pilot of another flight, identified as Kenneth Hoffman, said his plane was preparing to leave when he heard about the emergency via air traffic control.

He praised the pilot's response to the emergency, saying, “They treated it like a champion. At the end of the day, that's all about our training.”
