FEMA allocates $124 million for road repairs and infrastructure in Helene

Funding for Hurricane Helen Relief Announced

This week, the Department of Homeland Security unveiled additional funding aimed at Hurricane Helen relief, with a significant allocation announced by Executive Director Kristi Noem. Starting Sunday, a new $28 million allocation will be available, augmenting the total FEMA funding to $124 million. This comes in response to the catastrophic impacts of the Category 4 hurricane that struck Florida’s Big Bend region and wreaked havoc particularly in Smokey.

The funds are earmarked for crucial road repairs and restoration of key infrastructure, especially in North Carolina and Tennessee. One critical area is Interstate 40, which suffered extensive damage near the Pigeon River close to the state line—it’s a vital trucking route through the mountains.

Senator Peter Welch commented on the situation, expressing a desire for better local control over FEMA’s actions. Meanwhile, FEMA’s allocated resources will also focus on debris removal and addressing concerns related to “life and property.”

Deputy Tricia McLaughlin emphasized that North Carolina families affected by this disaster have felt neglected by the Biden administration, asserting that under Noem’s leadership, FEMA is accelerating its relief efforts for those impacted by Hurricane Helen.

Former President Trump, reflecting on the administration’s response, criticized Biden’s actions following the hurricane, suggesting they were insufficient, particularly in western North Carolina beyond Asheville. Biden, however, refuted Trump’s claims during a press conference, stating he had spoken with the North Carolina governor who indicated otherwise.

Noem also voiced her discontent with the federal response to flood issues in Texas, describing criticism as purely political rather than a genuine concern for the welfare of the nation.

In a recent campaign rally, Trump suggested that Biden’s management of Hurricane Helen was even worse than the response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005, where George W. Bush was famously called out for his handling of FEMA’s response efforts.
