Two of the four inmates known to have died at Waupun Correctional Facility since June died of drug overdoses and strokes, the coroner announced Wednesday.
Tyshun Lemons, 30, was found dead in the jail on October 2nd, and Cameron Williams, 24, was found dead in the jail on October 30th.
Dodge County Coroner PJ Schoebel said in a telephone interview that Lemons had overdosed on acetyl fentanyl, a powerful opioid painkiller. He ruled Lemons’ death accidental.
Crazy Wisconsin prison reports fourth inmate death since June
Lemons was sentenced to 13 years in prison in 2015 after being convicted of armed robbery and reckless endangerment, according to court records.
As for Williams, a blood vessel in his brain burst, causing a fatal stroke, Schoebel said. He ruled the death as natural.
Williams has bounced around the correctional system since 2019, when he was convicted of theft and bail jumping, according to Department of Corrections records.
Two of the four recent inmate deaths in Wisconsin prisons have been attributed to fentanyl overdose and stroke.
Dean Hoffman committed suicide in his Waupun cell in June. Donald Meyer was found dead at the facility on February 22, but authorities have not released details about either death. Schoebel said he has nothing to report about these deaths.
Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt said in a telephone interview that the deaths are still under investigation. He declined to comment on how Lemons obtained the fentanyl. Corrections officials also did not immediately respond to an email asking how Lemons obtained the drug.
Last year, the Department of Corrections imposed lockdowns in Waupun, as well as prisons in Green Bay and Stanley, citing a lack of guards.
A group of Waupun inmates filed a federal lawsuit in October, alleging the facility’s lockdown conditions amounted to cruel and unusual punishment. And last month, Hoffman’s daughter filed a federal lawsuit accusing Waupun authorities of failing to provide her father with adequate mental health care and medication. Those lawsuits are pending.
Stanley resumed normal operations in late November. Travel restrictions have been eased in Waupun and Green Bay, but some remain in place.
