Fernando Cruz’s “Gift Pitch” Shines

Fernando Cruz refers to his splitter as his “gift pitch.” When it works as intended, it becomes a problem for opposing batters, leading to swings and errors.

The right-handed reliever made a significant impact on Sunday, striking out three batters while facing two runners in a crucial eighth inning. His performance helped the Yankees come from behind to defeat the Orioles, finishing 4-2 at home.

Facing a 2-1 deficit, Cruz took over after lefty Tim Hill walked the first two batters. He quickly turned things around by striking out Ramon Laureano, Colton Couser, and Cedric Mullins.

“In a situation like that, with two runners on base, you really need a swing and a mistake,” Cruz explained. “You want to execute well, and getting those three strikeouts in a row was critical to keeping the game close.”

It was a notable improvement for Cruz, especially after he allowed three batters to reach base and gave up a run in his previous outing against the Angels. “That happens sometimes,” Boone commented. “The key is, he’s been so valuable to us this year.”

At 35, Cruz has posted a 3.26 ERA with 50 strikeouts in 29 appearances since joining the team in December, as part of a deal that sent former All-Star catcher Jose Trevino to the Reds.

“I truly believe my splitter is a gift pitch,” Cruz remarked. “I’ve worked to adjust it so it fits into the strike zone more effectively. It paid off today.”

Cruz also highlighted the pressure he felt with two runners on base, saying, “It means a lot. Tim Hill always supports me, and being able to keep the team in the game was huge.”

After spending 12 seasons in the minors, Cruz made his MLB debut with the Cincinnati Reds at the age of 32 in 2022.

The Yankees will embark on a three-game road series against the Reds starting Monday night.

Cruz expressed his appreciation for Cincinnati, saying, “It holds a special place in my heart since it’s where I debuted. They gave me my shot.” He added, “But now, I’m focused on this new chapter with the Yankees, and we’re ready to get to work.”
