Yankees Bullpen Set for Reinforcement
The Yankees’ bullpen, which has been through some tough times, is about to get a much-needed boost on Monday.
Fernando Cruz is anticipated to come off the injured list. He’s been sidelined for nearly two months due to a high-grade oblique strain.
Manager Aaron Boone hinted on Saturday that Cruz might be active as soon as Sunday, but the Yankees decided to hold off after he pitched just over an inning in the fourth game of his rehab stint.
“He was definitely impactful for us and a key part of the bullpen when he was healthy,” Boone stated before the Yanks’ 7-2 win against the Red Sox in their series finale. “He’s a great competitor and will take the ball in any situation. I’m really looking forward to bringing him back.”
Prior to his second stint on the injured list, Cruz had missed 15 days earlier this season due to shoulder inflammation. He recorded a decent 3.00 ERA with 54 strikeouts over 33 innings.
During his absence, the Yankees’ bullpen has struggled significantly. They entered Sunday with a 5.58 ERA, which ranked second-worst in the majors, even after the additions of Kamilo Doval and Jake Byrd.
Nevertheless, Cruz’s return is expected to provide Boone with more reliable options as the Yankees head into the final stretch of the season.
On another note, Paul Blackburn remained on the roster after he threw 71 pitches in Saturday’s game.
Meanwhile, Jasson Domínguez was out of the lineup for the fourth time in six games, so Giancarlo Stanton’s bat took over in right field for a double header.
Cody Bellinger anchored the left field alongside Trent Grisham, contributing to a strong performance by slugging two more home runs.
Austin Slater is also working on his recovery from a hamstring issue as he attempts to get back in gear for September.
Boone didn’t provide a timeline about when the outfielders could begin rehab assignments or if they would participate in live batting practice anytime soon.
