Fernando Cruz’s Return Amid Yankees’ Loss

On a memorable night, the most reassuring sight for the Yankees was the return of a healthy Fernando Cruz to the mound.

In a 4-0 defeat against the Guardians, Cruz made his comeback after a stint on the injured list.

This was his first appearance since May 17, and he pitched three innings, giving up two hits, one of which was a home run to Kyle Manzard.

“I thought he did really well,” Yankees’ manager Aaron Boone commented on Cruz’s performance. “His fastballs looked solid, and I noticed he was getting some swings and misses with his forkball and more.”

The forkball, or splitter, was particularly effective, eliciting nine swings from the Cleveland hitters. Cruz allowed just that one homer, which Manzard smacked out to right field.

Cruz reflected on the home run, suggesting that Manzard seemed ready for his fastball, and perhaps he was right.

What stood out even more was Cruz’s overall effectiveness and his health.

“Honestly, I’m a bit surprised,” Cruz shared, noting his impressive 2.92 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 24⅔ innings. “The speed was there, and the splitter felt amazing.”

He added, “It’s time to give the team what they need. I’m ready. I feel good.”

Yankees Face Decision on Giancarlo Stanton

Meanwhile, the Yankees are gearing up for a decision on Giancarlo Stanton.

After participating in live batting practice for over a week in Tampa, Stanton was expected to return to New York. Boone mentioned that they’d likely find out the next step soon.

Unlike previous instances, it seems Stanton won’t be assigned to a minor league team for rehabilitation. He had expressed, last month, that he thought he needed some time in the minors.

Since Stanton isn’t currently playing the field, Boone admitted he’s uncertain what that rehab plan might entail.

Stanton had missed two months of spring training last season due to elbow tendonitis in both arms, a situation he described as “severe.”

He has indicated that he will play through the pain once he returns.

All-Star Game Voting and Other Updates

In other news, the All-Star Game voting was revealed on Wednesday. Names like Paul Goldschmidt and Jazz Chisholm Jr. were among those listed, along with DJ LeMahieu and Anthony Volpe. Outfield contenders include Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger, and Trent Grisham, with Ben Rice in contention as the designated hitter.

Lastly, following a reassignment, Carlos Carrasco cleared waivers and is now with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Dominic Smith, who opted out of his minor league contract with the Yankees, has signed a major league deal with the Giants. Smith had a .782 OPS with eight home runs over 45 games in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
