Record-Breaking Pitching with a Touch of Humor
So, let’s talk about a little something that’s breaking records in pitching.
Fernando Mendoza, the quarterback for the Indiana Hoosiers and a national champion, showcased not just his pitching talents but also his comedic flair during an appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” last Thursday. This came just days after he secured the national title against the Miami Hurricanes, capping off a remarkable season for Indiana.
During the show, Mendoza, a Heisman Trophy winner with a magnetic personality, shared a light-hearted moment when Fallon asked about his championship win. With a smirk, he quipped, “Well, we finally have a coach. Cininetti, you made me laugh. That was the biggest accomplishment. But honestly, Indiana has mostly been known for basketball. Football, well, it’s been in purgatory for quite a while. Now, with Coach Cininetti’s leadership and a team full of underdogs who have faced doubt, we’re finally recognized as national champions. It means everything to us.”
Mendoza is projected as the top pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, and he later reminisced about a thrilling rushing touchdown in the championship match. He described instinctively darting to the right when he was originally set to run left, saying, “It’s like missing an exit on a map and thinking, ‘Oh, this way works too.’ Luckily, it was the right turn for a touchdown.”
This season, he made history as the first player from Indiana University to win the Heisman Trophy, setting single-season records for total touchdowns, passing touchdowns, and completion percentage.
In a playful moment on the show, Fallon challenged Mendoza to display his passing skills by tossing music records in the air, with the quarterback responding humorously, “Is this like my combine?”
Mendoza caught the attention of Raiders owner Mark Davis and minority owner Tom Brady, who were present at Hard Rock Stadium to watch the championship game, keenly observing Mendoza’s performance.
He wrapped up the season with impressive stats, including 3,535 passing yards and 41 touchdown passes, along with 186 yards on 16 completions in the title game alone.
Earlier this week, he further endeared himself to fans by posting a heartfelt update on LinkedIn about the national tournament victory. He wrote, “On Monday night, my teammates and I had the honor of lifting the National Championship trophy in Bloomington, Indiana for the first time ever. It was a moment that brought home the CFB title. With our coaches’ guidance and the unwavering support of Hoosier Nation, we turned the unbelievable into something real. Winning the national championship taught me a bit about B2B sales (just kidding… kinda).”
He concluded with a motivational note, encouraging, “Take a risk. When you’re facing 4th and 5 at the 12-yard line, sometimes you just have to go for it.”
