Indiana Quarterback Anticipates NFL Draft Selection
Indy quarterback Fernando Mendoza is widely expected to be the top pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, likely chosen by the Las Vegas Raiders.
During a media session at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Mendoza shared some thoughtful insights about his draft prospects.
His standout season brought the Hoosiers their first national championship, not to mention earning him the Heisman Trophy. This success has positioned him as a leading quarterback heading into the 2026 draft. There aren’t as many college picks this year, which boosts his prospects even further. Given the Raiders’ need for a quarterback, he’s unlikely to wait too long to hear his name called.
Mendoza has expressed that he would be grateful for the opportunity, whether he’s picked first or even at a later position like 199th.
This reference to the 199th pick is notable—it’s where Tom Brady was selected in the 2000 draft.
Brady, often considered one of the greatest quarterbacks, is also a minority owner of the Raiders.
Mendoza mentioned having met with the Raiders, where Brady reached out to say a quick hello, and he reported that it was a great experience.
“I was lucky to interview with the Las Vegas Raiders,” he remarked at the combine. “It was a solid discussion. The coaching staff was involved, and we reviewed some previous plays together. I thought it went really well.”
While acknowledging that the Raiders hold the No. 1 pick, Mendoza emphasized that anything could happen during the draft. “I’m thrilled about the opportunity, and whatever team picks me, I’m ready to give it my all,” he said.
Although he seems open to any team, he did hint that working under Brady would be especially appealing. “Who wouldn’t admire Tom Brady?” he asked. “He’s got more Super Bowl rings than anyone… It’s an incredible opportunity. I believe he’s the best quarterback ever by a large margin, and having him as a coach would mean a lot.”
Mendoza added, “I’m eager to learn, and there’s so much to absorb from day one. It’s going to be a long journey, and having a mentor like him would be quite impactful.”
