Fernando Mendoza Leads Indiana to National Championship
MIAMI — Fernando Mendoza was determined not to be denied.
Not in his own city. A perfect season was firmly in his grasp.
No way was that going to change.
The Heisman Trophy winner faced significant challenges against Miami’s tough pass rush and wasn’t at his best for much of the game. Yet, when it counted the most, he stepped up, exemplified by a crucial 12-yard touchdown run that secured Indiana’s stunning 27-21 victory at Hard Rock Stadium, marking the program’s first-ever national championship.
“This win is incredibly joyful for everyone, for the entire Hoosier nation. It means a lot to me,” Mendoza shared during an on-field interview, confetti fluttering around him. “As a two-star recruit out of high school, I was rejected by the University of Miami. It feels like the perfect culmination of my journey here, playing in front of all my friends and family in Miami.”
In the pivotal fourth quarter, Mendoza completed 4 of 7 passes for 70 yards, each completion crucial for a first down on third or fourth down attempts. But his standout moment? That remarkable run. With Indiana up by only three points and facing a critical 4-4 with just under ten minutes left, coach Curt Cignetti opted to go for it after a timeout with a quarterback draw play.
Though spaces were tight initially, Mendoza found a path, pushing through and earning a first down. He shook off a tackle from Wesley Visaint, spun around, and leaped towards the goal line. Even as Mohamed Toure hit him hard from behind, he managed to hold onto the ball—a moment reminiscent of John Elway’s famed plays.
“I was all in,” Mendoza recalled, “I was willing to risk it all for the team. Whatever the coaches needed, whether it was pushing through or handling tough situations, I was ready to give everything.”
This win truly felt like a fairy tale for Mendoza, who had gone from being an overlooked player to a star in college football. He became Indiana’s first Heisman Trophy winner and is now likely to be the top draft pick for the Raiders in April.
On that night, he achieved glory at the very stadium he used to know as a kid.
“I can hardly find the words,” Mendoza reflected. “This moment is the highlight of my life.”
