Fernando Mendoza was at the center of the celebration at Lucas Oil Stadium, and the emotions ran high as he faced the camera for his postgame interview, highlighting a remarkable journey for Indiana that’s far from over.
In an unexpected twist, Mendoza threw for 222 yards and a touchdown, leading the Hoosiers to a stunning 13-10 win over Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship Game in Indianapolis on Saturday night. This performance solidified his Heisman Trophy candidacy and likely secured Indiana a top seed in the College Football Playoff.
“It’s pretty beautiful,” Mendoza remarked during the Fox broadcast when reflecting on what a Big Ten championship would mean for Indiana. “Who would have guessed the Hoosiers would reach this point? But now, here we are as the upset champions. Let’s go!”
Mendoza, a transfer from the University of California, connected with Elijah Surratt for a 17-yard touchdown in the third quarter that gave Indiana the lead. He also made a crucial 33-yard pass to wide receiver Charlie Becker with just over two minutes remaining, further tilting the game in Indiana’s favor after Ohio State missed a field goal that could have tied it.
Saturday’s performance might be just what Mendoza needed to surpass the other Heisman finalists ahead of next week’s ceremony.
With the opportunity to be a top pick in the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft, Mendoza could attract attention from teams like the Jets, provided they secure enough draft picks.
“We’re progressing every day,” he expressed in the postgame broadcast. “Whether it’s the offensive line, the defense, the coaches, or special teams, we’re all working together towards one common goal. That’s our approach, and it’s what makes our bond so strong.”
This season, Mendoza threw for 2,758 yards, achieving 32 touchdowns with just five interceptions across 12 regular-season games. Despite throwing an early interception in the high-stakes clash, he bounced back and helped his team win 13 consecutive games. Remarkably, he also shook off an injury scare after a hard hit from Ohio State’s Caden Curry, managing to return after missing just one play.
After only winning six games with a lackluster California team last season, Mendoza now finds himself as the face of Indiana’s postseason hopes.
In his postgame interview, he reflected on how this recent success has impacted him personally.
