Coaching Changes in the NFL
Fernando Mendoza, the quarterbacks coach at Indiana University, is setting his sights on the NFL as he seeks to advance his career.
Chandler Whitmer has officially accepted the position of quarterbacks coach for the Buccaneers, as reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel. After spending a year as co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach under head coach Curt Cinetti, Whitmer is returning to the professional ranks.
Prior to his time at Indiana, Whitmer worked as an offensive assistant with the Chargers from 2021 to 2023 and briefly with the Falcons in 2024. He brings a wealth of experience to his new role.
Meanwhile, Mendoza enjoyed a standout season as a junior, leading the FBS with impressive numbers: 3,535 passing yards, 41 touchdowns, and an average of 10.78 adjusted air yards per attempt. His successful campaign helped Indiana secure its first Heisman Trophy and national championship title.
Interestingly, Whitmer has mentioned that Mendoza’s spring performance was a bit chaotic, characterized by some questionable decision-making. Yet, over time, Mendoza evolved into a star quarterback and has now declared for the NFL Draft.
Whitmer expressed high praise for Mendoza, particularly highlighting his unmatched preparation. “You can tell he just loves football. The passion he brings is a must for any quarterback, as you can’t just walk in and play. He genuinely enjoys the game,” Whitmer said before the national championship matchup.
On the Buccaneers’ end, Whitmer joins a team that finished with an 8-9 record, narrowly missing the playoffs due to tiebreakers. Following the season, head coach Todd Bowles made significant changes by letting go of five assistants, including Thaddeus Lewis, the team’s quarterbacks coach for the past five years.
Whitmer now has the task of guiding two-time Pro Bowl quarterback Baker Mayfield, as Tampa Bay aims to rebound in the competitive NFC South.
