Tatis Jr. Shines with Dramatic Homer
Fernando Tatis Jr. stepped up in a big way, delivering a bat flip that was as memorable as the home run he smashed.
In the fourth inning of Wednesday’s game, the Padres standout hit a three-run homer that helped the Dominican Republic take a solid four-run lead over Venezuela. The ball soared over the left-field fence as Tatis flipped his bat in a smooth follow-through, perfectly in sync with the vibrant atmosphere created by the Miami crowd.
The Dominican Republic triumphed with a score of 7-5, wrapping up the group stage with an impressive 4-0 record. They are set to face South Korea in the quarterfinals this Friday in Miami.
Tatis, at 27 years old, had a fantastic pool play showing, going 6-for-13 with two home runs, nine RBIs, six runs, and five walks, accompanied by three strikeouts. His vibrant play style seemed to energize the entire Dominican roster.
In a similar fashion, Mets player Juan Soto also showcased his flair with a bat flip after hitting a two-run homer in the first inning of the same game.
Soto and Tatis are part of an impressive Dominican national team roster, which includes talents like Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Ketel Marte, Manny Machado, Junior Caminero, Julio Rodriguez, and Austin Wells.
If the Dominican Republic manages to outplay South Korea on Friday, they may find themselves up against the United States in the semifinals on Sunday night, provided the U.S. defeats Canada later that evening.
But who knows? Given the U.S. team’s unexpected defeat to Italy and the pressure from their match with Mexico, nothing feels certain right now.
Italy’s win did secure the U.S.’s spot in the quarterfinals, but it’s not smooth sailing yet.
The other quarterfinals set to unfold include Japan versus Venezuela and Italy against Puerto Rico on Saturday.
The semifinal rounds will commence on Sunday, followed by the second round on Monday. Finally, the WBC Championship Game is scheduled for Tuesday.
