Festival Organizer Stands by Kanye West's Headlining Role as Key Sponsors Withdraw

Support for Ye Following Sponsor Pullouts from Wireless Festival

Organizers are standing behind the rapper formerly known as Kanye West as sponsors withdraw from London’s Wireless Festival due to his headliner status.

Melvin Benn, managing director of Festival Republic, released a statement expressing support for the decision to book Ye. He reflected on the culture of forgiveness, saying, “I hope that people (like me) look back at the comments in the moment that made them feel disgusted at the possibility of him appearing, and give him a degree of forgiveness and hope, as I have chosen to do.”

The artist, who changed his name in 2021, is set to perform for an audience of about 150,000 over three nights from July 10th to 12th.

Ye has faced substantial backlash recently due to anti-Semitic remarks, including praising Hitler. Last year, he released a song titled “Heil Hitler” and sold swastika T-shirts on his website. In January, he issued an apology through a full-page ad in the Wall Street Journal, attributing his actions to a manic episode linked to his bipolar disorder that led to “psychotic, paranoid and impulsive behavior.”

Sponsors such as Pepsi, Rockstar Energy, and Diageo have since withdrawn from the festival, although Pepsi has not specified a reason for its decision. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed significant concern regarding Ye’s booking.

Benn’s statement elaborated, “Ye’s music is being played on commercial radio stations in this country, available on live stream and download without comment or vitriol from anyone, and he has a legal right to enter and perform in this country.” He emphasized that the festival is not about glorifying any controversial views but simply about presenting music that many enjoy.

Recently, Ye performed at Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium for the first time in nearly five years, and fans appeared to differentiate between his views and his music. After his January apology, many were forgiving.

One fan, Yovani Contreras, shared, “I don’t really get into politics or what someone’s personal opinions are. I’m more interested in the artistry of the music. To me, you will always be you. Kanye will always be Kanye.”

A representative for Ye did not respond to a request for comment on Monday.
