Fever coach criticizes WNBA referees again after foul on Caitlin Clark and several ejections

On Tuesday, the Indiana Fever triumphed over the Connecticut Sun, earning a spot in the Commissioners Cup title game. However, most discussions following the game centered around a series of fights rather than the upcoming matchup against the Minnesota Lynx.

Tempers flared between players, especially involving Kate Linklark, which resulted in a serious foul and three ejections towards the end of the match. Fever head coach Stephanie White took the opportunity to address these issues in her post-game comments.

“This seems to be a recurring theme every year when the league meets in the fall and spring,” White noted. “It’s frustrating because, honestly, it feels like nothing really changes. You keep sending clips and having discussions, but the referees’ job is tough—everyone’s job is tough, right? Players are faster and stronger than ever, but refereeing… it’s not quite keeping up.”

She went on to express her concerns that while the game is evolving rapidly, officiating hasn’t seemed to improve significantly. “The pace of the game is picking up, but it feels like the officials aren’t quite on the same page. We hear coaches express this sentiment, but it leaves us wondering what can truly be done about it,” she added.

Looking back at the game, it’s important to note that Clark and Sun guard Jacee Sheldon have had a competitive rivalry since their college days at Iowa and Ohio, which set the stage for the intensity on the court.

Things grew heated when Sheldon unintentionally fouled Clark, leading to a physical altercation that saw Marina Mabry tackle Clark to the ground. Surprisingly, Mabry was not ejected, while Clark and Tina Charles received technical fouls, whereas Sheldon’s was a bit less obvious.

The Fever seized control of the game, extending their lead to 20 points in the fourth quarter. Clark sunk a critical three-pointer (her fourth of the night), then directed some words towards Sheldon as she headed to the Fever bench. Tensions remained high as they exchanged remarks during the next timeout.

As the game wound down, incidents escalated again. A violent foul by Sophie Cunningham on Sheldon led to yet another brawl and more ejections, leaving the officials seemingly detached from the unfolding chaos.

White mentioned that she had sensed trouble brewing from the game’s early moments and realized it wasn’t the first time officiating had seemed ineffective. “When this kind of thing happens repeatedly, it reflects throughout the season. It raises important questions about how the game is being managed,” White stated. “You have some of the top competitors in the world; allowing too much physical play can lead to these situations.”

This isn’t the first time White has voiced her concerns. After a loss earlier in the season, she was vocal about a foul call she deemed disrespectful. Now, it seems that the Fever believe boundaries are being breached, with coaches prepared to advocate for necessary changes.

White is perceptive to these ongoing issues within the league. “From what I’ve seen, there have been a number of altercations throughout the league. It appears to be a broader problem,” she commented. Given her remarks, it’s likely that this situation could attract some attention from the league’s authorities, which might result in fines or disciplinary actions. However, the Fever clearly feels that enough is enough, and they are willing to take a stand.
