Fever maintains momentum with strong, gritty victory in Game 2 against Dream

Indiana Fever Surges to Victory in Playoff Game

Indianapolis – “We’ve got it all. We all need it.” This saying, shared by Kelsey Mitchell with her teammates, became a rallying cry for the Fever, especially as injuries mounted and the playoffs drew near.

It was highlighted in a pre-game video before their match against Atlanta on Tuesday, and it perfectly encapsulated Indiana’s fight against elimination.

Following a loss in Game 1 of the series, the Fever found themselves in a tight spot. However, for the first time since 2015, they returned to Gainbridge Field House for a playoff game, fueled by a supportive crowd. Indiana rebounded with a solid 77-60 victory over the Dream.

“I felt really good about how we responded,” Mitchell stated after scoring 19 points. “We came out strong, addressing the issues we had in the previous game. It’s a huge positive for us; even small wins are significant.”

This season, the Fever had faced numerous challenges, particularly in their quest for a playoff spot as the year drew to a close. Yet, on Tuesday, they seemed determined to do everything possible to extend their season right from the tip-off.

Indiana’s defense was relentless, making it difficult for the Dream—one of the top offensive teams during the regular season—maintaining them at just 37.9% shooting overall and only 5-19 (26.3%) from beyond the arc.

They closed gaps in several key areas, flipping the narrative from their earlier loss. After struggling in the paint on Sunday, they took control of inside scoring, successfully countering Atlanta’s fast breaks.

Coach Stephanie White emphasized the importance of hustle. “We made those hustle plays and fought for loose balls. We finished defensive plays, boxed out well, and set screens effectively,” she explained.

As the third quarter began, Indiana held a fragile three-point lead and struggled to score. However, they pulled away with a decisive 19-7 run that highlighted the game’s turning point.

After a layup from Aliya Boston, Mitchell made a pivotal steal, leading to a buzzer-beater 3-pointer from Lexie Hull that extended Indiana’s lead to 59-44 entering the final quarter.

“That sequence was crucial for us. When I got the ball, I felt the energy shift,” Boston remarked. “The crowd went wild, and we used that momentum for the fourth quarter.”

Indiana didn’t let up, as Boston quickly added a 3-point play and a layup, pushing their lead to 20, effectively quashing any hopes of a Dream comeback.

This victory was a testament to the team’s grit and determination, reminiscent of their late regular-season push.

One player who significantly contributed was a forward who, though she scored only three points in 17 minutes, generated considerable energy and enthusiasm among fans.

“She brings so much energy; it’s infectious,” Boston praised. “Her pursuit of the ball, her presence, really boosts the team.”

This season, the Fever embraced a resilient identity. New players stepped up every game, showing that they could rise to the occasion when required.

Briana Turner, who had been out for much of the season, stepped in for 20 minutes with impressive rebounds and steals. Similarly, newcomer Peddy made a significant impact in just 23 minutes. In their last meeting, many of these players hadn’t even participated, highlighting their growth.

On Tuesday, their collective effort, combined with solid performances from key starters, led to the Fever’s first home playoff win since the 2015 WNBA Finals. Now, they are on the verge of an unexpected series victory as they prepare for Game 3 in Atlanta.

“This was massive for us,” Boston said. “We had to push through, and this win gives us a fighting chance in Game 3. The emotions are running high.”
