Fever part ways with DeWanna Bonner amid speculation of a troubled relationship

The Indiana Fever have parted ways with two-time WNBA Champion DeWanna Bonner. This decision comes after weeks of speculation regarding tension between Bonner and the team. Initially, she started the first three games for the Fever but was benched and subsequently missed the last five games due to personal reasons.

In a statement, Bonner expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to be part of the Fever organization. She mentioned that while she was looking forward to the season, the fit just wasn’t working. She appreciated the team’s willingness to let her move on, especially at this stage of her career. “I hope to see the team continue to develop their young, dynamic players,” she added.

Bonner’s difficulties seemed to begin after she was benched and subsequently replaced in the starting lineup after just three games. Reports suggest that expectations from both Bonner and the team haven’t aligned. Sources indicated that Bonner felt “off” in her role and was aiming to secure a starting position with the Fever. Meanwhile, league insiders have noted her interest in possibly heading to the Phoenix Mercury or Atlanta Dream instead.

Bonner now has a 48-hour window for a team to pick her up from the expected exemption for her remaining $200,000 contract. If not, she could enter unrestricted free agency and sign a deal reflecting a veteran minimum salary range.

In the meantime, the Fever have signed guard Ahli MacDonald, who has averaged 11 points, 3 assists, and 2 steals over three appearances this season after being acquired via the WNBA emergency hardship exception.
