Fever player finds redemption in victory against Dream and shares her approach to the game.

Natasha Howard’s Remarkable Turnaround

After a tough outing against the Atlanta Dream where she managed just six points on 3-9 shooting, Indiana Fever forward Natasha Howard faced a significant turnaround just two nights later. The 33-year-old veteran exploded for a game-high 26 points with impressive 12-17 shooting, proving crucial for a team that was struggling overall—remaining starters combined for only 13-39 shooting. A loss would have put them at a disappointing 1-2 start to the season.

What sparked such a sudden change in performance? “Stop your head – that’s it,” Howard shared after the game, reflecting on her mindset. “I was my way, and I’m grateful that my teammates were behind me tonight to help bring my confidence out.” She credited meditation, prayer, and support from her wife for getting her back on track ahead of the game.

On Thursday, she even shared an uplifting prayer on Twitter, further emphasizing her positive mindset.

Howard’s average of 16 points across the three games has significantly boosted the Fever’s defense—a unit that struggled last season. Previously, while playing for the Dallas Wings, she averaged 17.6 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game, and she was recognized as the WNBA Player of the Year back in 2019.

Sophie Cunningham Debuts

Natasha Howard was not the only offseason addition making an impact on the Fever. Sophie Cunningham, sidelined for the first two games due to an ankle sprain, made her much-anticipated debut, contributing nine points in 20 minutes off the bench, along with six rebounds and three assists. She even nailed a couple of three-pointers toward the end of the first quarter.

The Fever entered the season with high hopes for a championship, showing flashes of potential, but they faced significant challenges from the Dream. Dream guard Ruin Howard led her team with 24 points, supported by Breona Jones with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Alisha Gray and rookie Te Hina Paopao each added 11 points.

“We don’t feel like we’re in good alignment with them,” said Stephanie White, the director of The Dream. “They’re difficult to handle with so many Olympians, quickness, and strength. We need to leverage our depth to contend with their size.” On this night, however, it was Natasha Howard who led the charge for the Fever.
