Indiana Fever Welcomes Back Sophie Cunningham

The Indiana Fever is making some exciting moves this offseason.

They’ve re-signed guards Kelsey Mitchell and Lexi Hull, and now they’re bringing back Sophie Cunningham as well, as the team revealed on Sunday. This will be a one-year contract.

Cunningham, who is 29, appeared in 30 games last season for Indiana, averaging 8.6 points and 3.5 rebounds while maintaining a field goal percentage of 43.2. She played a vital role as a supporter for Caitlin Clark during the previous year.

Amber Cox, the COO and General Manager, expressed enthusiasm about Cunningham’s return, highlighting her dedication to building on last season’s achievements. “Sophie is not only one of the best 3-point shooters in the league; she is also a fantastic teammate, both on and off the court,” she noted. “Her contagious energy positively impacts our team and resonates with our fans.”

This chemistry on and off the court has led fans to affectionately nickname Cunningham, Hull, and Clark as “Tres Leches.” In an intense game against the Connecticut Sun in June, Cunningham notably defended Clark in a viral incident, showcasing her fierce loyalty.

During a scuffle where Clark was hit in the eye and shoved to the ground, Cunningham retaliated by taking down Jaycee Sheldon, which resulted in a couple of flagrant fouls and her ejection from the game.

Cunningham also graced this year’s Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, adding to her growing popularity.

This offseason has seen the Fever actively enhancing their roster around Clark, with the addition of Monique Billings and Ty Harris as valuable free agent signings.

As for Mitchell, she had a stellar last season, averaging 20.2 points and earning a spot on the All-WNBA First Team, signing a lucrative one-year contract worth $1.4 million.

Clark had a tough time in her sophomore season, managing to play only 13 games due to injuries.

Despite her challenges, she is reported to feel “really healthy” following a lengthy recovery period and is eager to help the Fever when they kick off their season against the Dallas Wings on May 9th.
