Fever taps into the strength of a 'special group' to surprise Dream in WNBA playoffs

Indiana Fever Achieves Playoff Upset Against Atlanta Dream

The Indiana Fever has faced numerous challenges this season, but Thursday’s game felt particularly significant. Not only did they need to compete against the second-seeded Atlanta Dream, but they were also on the road for Game 3, which added to the intensity of the situation.

In a surprising turn of events, the Fever pulled off a victory with a layup by Aliya Boston, just 7.4 seconds before the buzzer, which allowed them to advance to the WNBA playoff semifinals.

Director Stephanie White commented on the team’s resilience, saying, “This group has been through every situation you can imagine. We knew we had to keep our composure, and it felt like we had been stuck without scoring for a while.”

In a crucial moment during the last minute of the game, Lexie Hull managed to convert a layup – a shot that initially seemed to be heading for disaster – just before the shot clock buzzed, bringing the Fever within one point.

After a missed three-pointer by Rhyne Howard, the Fever experienced what might have been their luckiest break of the season. Kelsey Mitchell, who later finished with a game-high of 24 points, chased down a loose ball that had slipped from her intended pass to Boston.

Odyssey Sims then found Boston, who achieved a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds, allowing for yet another crucial score.

White reflected on the mindset during that pivotal moment, pondering whether a timeout was necessary, but ultimately trusting her players on the court to make the right decisions. “When the ball comes alive, we need to see the opportunity,” she explained.

Shortly after, Hull stole an inbound pass from the Dream, setting up Sims to take two free throws. Atlanta’s last chance came with just 1.2 seconds on the clock, but Bri Jones’ desperate three-point attempt missed, sealing the Fever’s victory.

Natasha Howard expressed her amazement: “I’m just speechless about how we fought throughout this game. They had their run, we had ours, but in the end, it was our defense that kept us in the game.”

The physicality of Game 3 was fitting for such a gritty series. There was plenty of hard fouls, and at one point during the third quarter, tensions flared when Jones and Boston got tangled up, leading to a foul on Jones and a technical on Boston. White viewed this as a turning point for the Fever.

Despite Atlanta’s lead for most of the third quarter, the Fever managed to keep pressing. They had opportunities, with Britturner missing a potential game-tying layup. In response, Atlanta scored quickly, but a three-pointer from Howard halted their momentum.

“I knew it would be a tough game,” Mitchell said before the matchup. “Sometimes you just need to dig deeper and show resilience, which is what we did. It’s important not to give up, and this group has something special.”

With the season filled with unexpected moments and commendable achievements, the Fever’s playoff journey shows just how tough this team has become. Winning road playoff games is notoriously difficult, and doing so under these circumstances is a testament to their strength.

What is particularly remarkable is that this year’s team includes three players who were added after the All-Star break, yet they made significant contributions in the series.

White noted the unique culture the Fever has built this season and how vital it has been during games like Thursday’s. “This group is really special. They have resilience, flexibility, and an inclusive spirit that allows each teammate to shine and support one another,” she remarked.

“I’m proud to be coaching this team. They exemplify toughness and grit, and I love being on this journey with them.”
