Indiana Fever Triumph Over Minnesota Lynx
In an exciting matchup, the Indiana Fever overcame the Minnesota Lynx with a final score of 74-59 during the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup final on Tuesday night. Natasha Howard was a standout player, contributing 16 points, 12 rebounds, and four assists.
Notably absent from the Lynx’s roster was All-Star guard Kaitlyn Clark, who has been sidelined since June 24. Even without her, Indiana managed to stage a comeback after trailing by 13 points early on, showcasing effective scoring and strong defensive strategies against one of the league’s top teams.
The Lynx faced their worst offensive outing of the season, shooting just 34.9% from the field. They averaged 9.4 three-pointers this season but only managed to convert one out of four attempts in this game.
Sophie Cunningham led the Fever’s scoring with 13 points, while teammates Aliya Boston, Ahri MacDonald, and Kelsey Mitchell each added 12 points to the tally.
On Minnesota’s side, Alana Smith was the top scorer with 15 points. Napheesa Collier contributed 12 points and nearly a double-double with nine rebounds, but she also tallied some of the team’s 16 turnovers. Courtney Williams chipped in with 11 points.
Smith’s shooting included a clutch three-pointer and an impressive acrobatic layup, temporarily stemming a 12-0 run that initially put Minnesota ahead 18-9. However, the Lynx quickly extended their lead to 27-14 early in the second quarter, only to go scoreless for more than eight minutes as the Fever seized momentum. Indiana closed the half with a stunning 18-0 run, ending with a 32-27 lead.
In the third quarter, Howard scored 10 points, ensuring the Lynx couldn’t get closer than seven points.
Even when Minnesota attempted to close the gap to 60-51 mid-quarter, Cunningham hit her third three-pointer of the night, quieting the crowd and reinforcing Indiana’s control of the game.
This victory contrasts sharply with last year’s Commissioner Cup final, where the Lynx claimed victory over the New York Liberty on the road. Minnesota, with a stellar 14-2 record this season, had been positioned for a home-court advantage, but it wasn’t enough against the resurgent Fever.
