Indiana Fever’s Unexpected Victory
Somehow, Indiana Fever pulled off an incredible win.
Even without key players like Caitlyn Clark, Sophie Cunningham, Ahri MacDonald, Sidney Colson, Damiris Dantas, and Chloe Bibby, the Fever managed to defeat the Atlanta Dream 87-85, securing a spot in the semi-finals.
This triumph was truly a team effort, highlighted by Kelsey Mitchell, who often steals the spotlight.
Aliya Boston, another All-Star, contributed significantly with 14 points, 12 rebounds, and six assists.
Lexie Hull also stepped up, recording 10 points, along with two assists and a crucial steal in the final moments of the game.
Remarkably, the Fever upset the Dream on their home court, which is no small feat.
Coaching Praise for Stephanie White
After the game, Caitlyn Clark took to social media to express her admiration for head coach Stefanie White.
This season, White, a new addition to the Fever, hasn’t attracted as much attention compared to other coaches like Golden State’s Natalie Nakaze, who was named Coach of the Year. Coaches from teams like Atlanta and Minnesota also received media votes for the award.
Despite being somewhat under the radar, White has effectively guided Mitchell and Boston in their standout seasons, keeping the team united regardless of who was sidelined.
“No coach has respected me as much as Steph,” Mitchell shared after the win. “For the first time in my career, it feels like people truly value what I bring to the team, both as a player and as a person.”
The stats back this up. Mitchell is averaging 20.2 points and 3.4 assists this season—both career highs—and she’s in the running for a spot on the First Team All-WNBA as well as a potential MVP finalist.
Natasha Howard also made her mark, contributing 12 points, six rebounds, and three assists in the win. Returning to Indiana, where she started her WNBA journey over a decade ago, her impact is evident.
Following the significant victory, Howard expressed gratitude for Stephanie White’s mentorship.
“It means a lot to be back in Indiana, coaching alongside the person who believed in me during my early career,” Howard noted. “There’s a lot of pressure, but I’m ready for it. She’s doing a fantastic job for everyone on this team.”
With White’s guidance, point guard Odyssey Sims has thrived. Since signing with Indiana after a tough injury period, she posted impressive numbers: 16 points, eight assists, three steals, and notably, zero turnovers.
Her standout moment? A critical assist to Boston for the winning layup.
After being let go by the Los Angeles Sparks in July, Sims has certainly found her rhythm in Indiana, making her presence felt on the team.
I guess the journey in Indiana is just beginning. As Brianna Turner, a backup center, stated following the victory, it wasn’t just about winning.
Next up, Indiana will face the Las Vegas Aces in the playoffs. Under Stephanie White’s leadership, they have shown they can’t be overlooked.
