Fewer employees say they are thriving: Gallup

The number of employees who say they are successful is decreasing, according to Latest information from Gallup Life evaluation index.

Fifty percent of employees say they are successful, while 45% say they are struggling. A further 4 percent said they were suffering. Although it has been steadily declining since 2020, the 2024 figure marks the lowest prosperity rate since Gallup created the index in 2009.

The Gallup Life Evaluation Index measures how people evaluate their current and anticipated future lives. Respondents who say they are “thriving” have a positive outlook on their current and immediate future. They report significantly fewer health problems, fewer negative emotions such as worry and stress, and more positive emotions such as happiness and energy.

Similarly, 51% of respondents said they “often” feel stressed during the day, up from 49% in 2023. 18% of respondents said the same about anger.

Gallup also found that workers who are having a bad time in life experience more anxiety, anger, and burnout. 28% of U.S. employees already say they feel burnt out at work “very often or always.”

Engaged employees who aren't “successful” are 61% more likely to experience frequent or always burnout and twice as likely to be sad or angry. Meanwhile, high-performing employees miss 53% fewer days due to health issues. An August Gallup poll also found that only 37% of employees feel respected at work, down from 39% in May.

The Gallup poll, conducted Aug. 11-25, surveyed 10,570 full-time workers and had a margin of error of 1.2 percentage points.
