OpenAI Executive Steps Down Due to Health Issues

Fiji Simo, who served as a crucial figure alongside Sam Altman at OpenAI, is resigning from her full-time position following a prolonged medical leave. This comes as the AI company gears up for an initial public offering (IPO).

Simo discussed her health challenges on X, revealing that her neuroimmune illness has worsened and her recovery will take longer than initially anticipated.

“This was one of the hardest decisions of my career, but my body had no choice. My symptoms grew as stubborn as I was,” she wrote, indicating the tough nature of her situation.

This resignation is part of a broader trend of significant changes at OpenAI. Earlier this year, Brad Lightcap, the long-serving chief operating officer, transitioned into a role focused on “special projects.”

Additionally, Kate Ruesch, the chief marketing officer, left in the spring to concentrate on her recovery from cancer. Kevin Weil, who headed research, also departed around the same time.

In an internal memo on Thursday, Simo said her product and business responsibilities would be shared among Greg Brockman, the president, Sarah Friar, the CFO, and Jason Kwon, the chief strategy officer.

Simo played an important role in redirecting OpenAI’s focus toward business-oriented coding tools, especially after its competitor, Anthropic, made strides in this area. She spearheaded a significant project to create a coding-focused “super app,” which was launched recently, as part of efforts to streamline operations.

She was slated to serve as a part-time advisor moving forward and had aimed to enhance the growth of ChatGPT by introducing new features, including advertising capabilities and health advice. There were expectations that she would take on a greater role as the company approached its IPO, anticipated within this year.

Simo joined OpenAI last August and took on numerous management duties from Altman, including oversight of the CFO and chief revenue officer. She had announced her medical leave in April, citing a worsening condition.

In her post on X, Simo expressed gratitude for the support she received when she chose to prioritize her health. “The truth is, I only made this decision now because I have failed so many times in the past,” she noted.

Before joining OpenAI, Simo was CEO of the grocery delivery app Instacart and held a significant position at Facebook. Such experiences positioned her to lead OpenAI’s consumer business.

However, ChatGPT’s expansion faced hurdles last year, not meeting expected revenue targets. In an effort to compete with Anthropic’s focus on business-centric coding tools, OpenAI has ramped up its initiatives in that sector.
