MILWAUKEE — Nothing was going right for the Mets at the start of Friday's game, including Carlos Mendoza not being at the finish line.
The Mets manager was fired in the third and a half innings for a walk and a contested strike after Francisco Alvarez was punched out with two people on base at American Family Field.
Alvarez had a long battle with Brewers right-hander Frankie Montas, fouling off four consecutive full-count pitches.
The tenth pitch of the at-bat appeared just below the zone, and Alvarez took a few steps toward first base.
But home plate umpire Ramon de Jesus ruled a strike three, ending the frame and ending what would have been a bases-loaded chance for Tyrone Taylor.
Convinced that his first strike came off the bat, Mendoza barked from the dugout and was ejected for the second time this season.
He then ran onto the field and yelled at De Jesus for a moment before being ejected from what turned out to be a scary game for the Mets, who were leading 5-2 at the time.
In a key game for the wild card race, Sean Manaea allowed a grand slam to Mets killer Reece Hoskins in the first inning.
It was also unfortunate that Francisco Lindor, who was trying to get through the game due to poor health after missing eight consecutive games, made a throwing error.
