EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — World Cup Finals Turf Up for Grabs
The World Cup finals are not just about the game; they’re also offering up some real estate in the form of turf. FIFA has faced some backlash this year for high ticket prices, and now it’s cutting down on the grass used for the final match on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Interested fans can snag a piece for $450 each.
Each chunk of grass is advertised as measuring 17.5 x 17.5 x 17.5, but, curiously, there’s no mention of whether that’s in inches, centimeters, or perhaps something else entirely. A bit vague, I think.
The governing body for soccer didn’t reply to requests for clarification on the measurements.
The FIFA website promotes the opportunity, saying, “Get a piece of authentic soccer history by preserving a fragment of the authentic 2026 FIFA World Cup pitch in premium acrylic.” It sounds pretty cool, but I wonder how many people will actually go for it.
Each piece supposedly includes a unique fragment of the famous playing surface, making it a collectible that celebrates a major sporting event.
FIFA adds that the acrylic USB includes an authenticity film and presents a modern display piece. It even comes in a nice shoulder box with fancy detailing, aiming to attract collectors and football fans alike.
However, there’s a catch: turf can only be shipped to addresses in the United States and Europe.
“Orders won’t ship until after the 2026 FIFA World Cup Finals,” FIFA stated, leaving some fans possibly frustrated with the wait.
Additionally, players and coaches have raised concerns about MetLife’s field quality, which usually utilizes artificial turf for NFL games featuring the New York Giants and Jets.
For those more interested in spectating, FIFA is selling standard tickets for the final at prices reaching up to $32,970. If you want the full experience, hospitality tickets—with food and drink—are going for around $34,500 and $32,500.
