FIFA Probes Argentina Following World Cup Incident

FIFA has launched an investigation into Argentina due to the team’s conduct after their defeat to Spain at MetLife Stadium on Sunday.

The tension escalated after Leandro Paredes delivered a punch to Spain’s Eric Garcia, which sent him to the ground. Gabi, another Spanish player, was pushed down while trying to intervene, leading to a scuffle involving players from both teams.

Things eventually diffused enough for Spain to celebrate their 1-0 World Cup victory. However, the altercation has caught FIFA’s attention. On Monday, they issued a brief statement indicating that an investigation would take place regarding the incidents that occurred post-match.

According to FIFA, “After reviewing the match report concerning the FIFA World Cup Final between Spain and Argentina, the FIFA Disciplinary Commission has designated a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to look into potential violations relating to the FDC post-match incidents, as stated in article 36 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.” They added that further details would be shared following the completion of the prosecutor’s report.

It’s unclear how long this investigation will last or what its outcome might be. There’s criticism directed towards Argentina, questioning not just their gameplay but also their behavior post-loss.

Interestingly, after the match, Argentina’s players notably turned their backs on the Spanish team during the post-match ceremony. They also avoided the media, circling around the mixed zone, which is rather uncharacteristic of a losing team during such significant moments.

In response to the incident, Spain’s Dani Olmo expressed his disappointment with Argentina’s actions. “We don’t care,” he remarked. “What’s more important are the values we want to convey. We aim to be role models for many generations, and I think they should strive for that as well. Now, it’s time for us to enjoy this.”
