FIFA validates Balogun's one-game ban following disputed red card

U.S. Men’s Team Faces Challenge Without Balogun

The U.S. men’s national soccer team recently enjoyed a significant victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina, yet a looming concern awaits them as they prepare for their next match against Belgium.

This worry centers around star striker Folarin Balogun, who received a contentious red card towards the end of the game, resulting in a suspension. Thankfully, on Friday, FIFA clarified that his suspension would last just one game.

The likelihood that FIFA would extend Balogun’s suspension was pretty slim, but it’s a relief to see this confirmed officially. For the U.S., this is honestly the best news they could have hoped for right now.

In the U.S., there’s no avenue for appealing such decisions, so fingers crossed were held that the punishment would be minor. Balogun shared his thoughts on the situation shortly after FIFA’s announcement, emphasizing that the incident was unintentional. He remarked, “The referee’s choice was his choice. I don’t think it was the right choice,” suggesting he felt a yellow card would have sufficed.

He expressed acceptance of the decision, saying they need to move on. As for the upcoming match, it’ll definitely be a challenge without him, especially since he’s currently the team’s leading scorer in this tournament.

However, there is a silver lining: if the U.S. manages to pull off a surprise against Belgium, Balogun’s return for the quarterfinals will certainly boost morale.
