Recapture of Escaped Inmate in New Orleans
Authorities confirmed on Tuesday that they have recaptured the fifth of ten inmates who escaped from a New Orleans prison last week. Corey Boyd was apprehended just hours after his escape on Friday, according to the Louisiana State Police.
The 19-year-old was found in New Orleans. He faces serious charges related to a car robbery that resulted in a death in 2024.
“Boyd will eventually be transferred to a secure facility outside the area to prevent any further escape attempts,” state police mentioned in a social media update.
Boyd was initially incarcerated for second-degree murder, along with additional charges including attempted murder, aggravated battery, and making threats against public officials.
The dramatic escape occurred at the Orleans Parish Correctional Facility and was captured on surveillance footage. Authorities reported that the inmates created a hidden hole behind a toilet, breached the prison’s barbed wire fence, and ran towards the highway, changing clothes to evade detection.
The other five escapees remain at large:
- Renton J. Vanbren Jr., 26, is charged with illegal transportation of weapons, possession of firearms by a felon, obstructing justice, and introducing contraband into prisons.
- Jermaine Donald, 42, faces charges of second-degree murder, aggravated battery, possession of a firearm or weapon by a felon, and obstruction of justice.
- Antoine Massey, 32, is charged with domestic abuse including strangulation, car theft, and parole violations.
- Derrick Groves, 27, has three counts of second-degree murder, in addition to charges of battery against a correctional facility employee.
- Leo O. Tate Sr., 31, faces charges of simple robbery at a residence, weapon possession by a felon, illegal weapon transportation, vehicle theft, and multiple drug-related counts.
According to the office of Louisiana Attorney General Liz Maryll, a maintenance worker was arrested on Tuesday, facing ten counts of simple escape and misconduct related to the incident.
Reports indicate that inmates threatened to attack the worker if he refused to aid in their escape plan.
