Fifth Civilian Arrested in Orleans Jail Escape Case
A fifth individual has been taken into custody in connection with the escape of ten prisoners from the Orleans Judicial Center on May 16. Casey Smith, age 30, is facing accusations of aiding two of the fugitives by providing transportation to various locations shortly after they broke free.
According to the New Orleans Police Department’s release, Smith reportedly admitted to being involved with Colny Harris, 31, who was apprehended earlier in the week.
Smith’s potential role in the escape came to light through an investigation by the Tactical II team within the NOPD’s Special Operations Division. Authorities assert that she played a part in moving at least two escapees after their breakout.
Officers located Smith at a residence in the city’s third district. During questioning, the police indicated that she, along with Harris, facilitated the transportation of the escapees.
She has been charged as an accessory after the fact to a simple escape.
