F-16 Fighter Jets Intercept Aircraft in New Jersey

On Sunday, F-16 fighter jets were called into action to intercept several aircraft that entered restricted airspace over New Jersey, as confirmed by officials from North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD).

A few general aviation aircraft disregarded temporary flight restrictions in the vicinity of Bedminster and East Rutherford. This prompted NORAD’s response. According to reports, over ten general aviation aircraft breached the restrictions, with three requiring interception by NORAD jets.

During two of these interceptions, the NORAD aircraft deployed flares, which were visible to the public. A NORAD spokesperson explained that these flares were intended to grab the attention of the pilots. They emphasized that the flares, designed with safety in mind, burn out quickly and do not pose any risk to people on the ground. After the interceptions, the general aviation aircraft were safely guided out of the restricted area.

NORAD also provided instructions for pilots, stating that if their aircraft is intercepted, they should immediately switch to the frequencies 121.5 or 243.0, and then change course until they receive further directions.

A military official noted that the restricted airspace included areas around the location of the World Cup finals, as reported by CBS News.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issues temporary flight restrictions and notifies pilots through messages known as NOTAMs. These prohibit entry into specific airspace without authorization for a designated period. This rule extends to drones as well. Violating these restrictions could result in various penalties, including warnings, fines, or suspensions.

It’s worth mentioning that back in March 2025, fighter jets had intercepted an aircraft over Mar-a-Lago, Florida, citing significant violations of NORAD’s temporary flight restrictions as reported by Breitbart News.

In that instance, NORAD disclosed that they had intercepted more than 20 violations near Mar-a-Lago since President Trump had taken office just seven weeks earlier.
