Final Aim Is 'Taking Control of Production'

Zohran Mamdani’s Views on Socialism

Zohran Mamdani, a self-identified socialist and Democratic candidate, made a statement in 2021 about “grabbing the means of production.” He asserts, however, that his ultimate aim isn’t to establish a communist agenda.

Mamdani, who serves as a New York State Senator and is affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), discussed his approach to “beating socialism” during a DSA meeting designed to engage younger audiences in February 2021.

“What is the purpose of this whole project? It’s not just about raising class consciousness; it’s about beating socialism. Raising class awareness is important, but we also need to back candidates who understand this mission and can advance it whenever possible. We need to keep electing more socialists.”

He highlighted prominent issues for socialists, including boycotting Israel and the BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) movement, along with the complex goal of seizing means of production—something he acknowledges doesn’t currently enjoy widespread support.

Mamdani continued by stressing the importance of organizing effectively. “The implications of succeeding here greatly affect the lives of many in our communities across this borough,” he noted. He included the idea that socialism promotes policies like the decriminalization of sex work.

The concept of “grabbing the means of production” ties back to Marxist and Communist theories, which were notably advanced by Karl Marx.

Recently, Mamdani faced criticism from former President Donald Trump after defeating New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who referred to him as a “communist madman.” Despite the label, Mamdani expressed disagreement with that characterization.

When NBC’s Kristen Welker questioned him about being a communist, he replied, “No, I’m not.” He elaborated, suggesting that political distractions stem from how he presents himself and, ultimately, who he is.

He referenced Martin Luther King Jr., saying, “We must call it democracy, we must call it democratic socialism, and we need a fairer distribution of wealth for all the children of God in this country.”
