Box Office Results: “Final Destination: Bloodline” Dominates
This past weekend, the latest installment of the “Final Destination” series, titled “Final Destination: Bloodline”, has proven that the franchise is still very much alive at the box office. According to studio estimates, it attracted a considerable audience, generating ticket sales of $51 million domestically. The film also received strong international results, pushing its global total to $122 million.
In stark contrast, Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye’s experimental thriller “Hurry Tomorrow” struggled to gain traction, opening outside the top five with an estimated $3.3 million.
Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst at ComScore, remarked, “It was always going to be tough for ‘Hurry Tomorrow’ to compete with ‘Final Destination: Bloodline.’ There was quite a bit of buzz around it.”
“Final Destination: Bloodline” opened across 3,523 locations, benefiting from impressive reviews—93% on Rotten Tomatoes—and an effective viral marketing campaign. This success marks the revival of the 25-year-old franchise, which had been dormant since 2011. Warner Bros. also experienced a solid weekend, with Ryan Coogler’s “Sinner” and the “Minecraft Movie” both landing in the top five.
Disney’s “Thunderbolts” took the second spot with $16.5 million, boosting its global earnings to over $325 million. “Sinner” followed in third with $15.4 million, reaching a worldwide total of $316.8 million. The “Minecraft Movie” added $5.9 million to its impressive $928.6 million total. Rounding out the top five was Amazon MGM Studios’ “The Accountant 2.”
“Hurry Tomorrow” managed to secure the sixth position. Co-written by Tesfaye and directed by Trey Edward Shults, the film acts as a companion piece to his music and features him as a fictional version of himself—an insomniac musician. It also stars Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan.
Unfortunately, both critics and audiences did not respond well to the film. It holds only 13% on Rotten Tomatoes and received a poor Cinemascore. Maria Sherman, a music writer, described it as “an intriguing vanity project,” featuring surreal ideas but lacking solid writing or emotional depth, which left the narrative feeling unclear.
Lionsgate managed the release of this R-rated film, which opened on over 2,000 screens. Despite its low earnings, the $3.3 million was still enough to deem the venture profitable for the studio.
Looking ahead, next weekend is gearing up to be significant for theaters, with “Mission: Impossible – Final Calculations” and the live-action “Lilo & Stitch” both set to debut nationwide. It’s worth noting that domestic box office revenue has increased nearly 15% compared to last year.
Dergarabedian stated, “This weekend serves as an excellent opening act for what could unfold into one of the most significant Memorial Day weekends at the box office.”
