Last U.S. Penny Fetches Record Auction Price

It’s incredible, really. The last U.S. penny ever minted was auctioned off last Thursday for an astonishing $16.76 million.

A rare 232-coin set broke records, becoming the highest-priced auction of special coins ever conducted by the U.S. Mint, as reported by Stack’s Bowers Gallery.

The particular set contained the very last penny coins produced before the Mint ceased operations in November, and—believe it or not—sold for $800,000.

This collectible piece includes a 2025 penny minted in Philadelphia, a 2025-D penny from Denver, and an exceptional 2025 penny made of 24-karat gold, also from Philadelphia. Each coin features an engraving of the Greek letter omega, signifying the end of a two-century-long tradition with the penny.

Brian Kendrella, president of Stack’s Bowers Gallery, expressed excitement in a statement: “We are extremely honored to have been chosen once again to partner with the U.S. Mint and to offer collectors exciting numismatic rarities.”

It’s fascinating how something so seemingly simple can captivate so many. I mean, just think about it—these last pennies are like little time capsules.

The demand has clearly been intense. Even professionals in the numismatic field, who regularly handle historical coins, were seemingly thrilled to work with these final stray pennies.

Production of the penny came to a stop in 2026, following concerns that manufacturing costs were reaching around four times the value of one single cent.

“While general production ends today, the penny’s story continues,” remarked Christy McNally, acting chief of the Mint. “Its significance in American history will endure as its use in commerce evolves.” That kind of perspective is sort of reminiscent of how we view tokens of the past, right?

The U.S. Mint first started creating pennies back in 1793 when Philadelphia was still the capital of the nation. It’s interesting to think about how far we’ve come.

Interestingly, some coin experts had previously estimated that the last minted penny might go for as much as $5 million at auction. Looks like they were underestimating its worth!
