Jets Fall to Packers in Overtime Despite Strong Performance

The Jets managed to outgain the Packers, racking up 285 yards to Green Bay’s 199. They controlled the game clock too, holding the ball for 37 minutes and 40 seconds, compared to the Packers’ 26 minutes and 57 seconds.

Additionally, they won the turnover battle. With all these advantages and even a 10-point lead with just over 11 minutes left in the fourth quarter, it seemed like a win was within reach. However, the Jets suffered a 20-17 overtime defeat at MetLife Stadium that was marred by an astounding 13 penalties totaling 156 yards.

One penalty stood out as particularly damaging: Jarvis Brownlee Jr.’s unnecessary roughness during overtime on Chris Brooks after a 15-yard reception. This penalty placed the Packers right at the Jets’ 22-yard line, and soon after, Jordan Love connected with Matthew Golden for another 15 yards, setting up Trey Smack’s game-winning 26-yard field goal.

Brownlee didn’t address reporters about his mistake post-game, but Coach Aaron Glenn did not hold back. “It just can’t happen,” he said. “I don’t think it’s anything he doesn’t know. We can’t let our emotions get the best of us in crucial moments. That was a decision we should have made differently.”

Andre Cisco, a safety, weighed in on Brownlee’s penalty, suggesting that while aggressive players sometimes make impulsive mistakes, it was indeed poorly timed. “We trust him, and I don’t think we’ll dwell on it too much,” he added.

While Brownlee felt the heat of criticism, he wasn’t the only player who contributed to the Jets’ downfall. Right guard Joe Tippmann reflected on his own mishap, a false start in the third quarter. “I can’t help but think about those moments. It’s all about being present and focused in the game,” he noted with regret.

These mistakes, along with their penalties, were highlighted by Glenn after the game. He pointed out that not only were the Jets penalized heavily, but they also had more yards assessed against them despite the Packers committing a higher number of penalties overall.

“I know this,” Glenn concluded. “Next week, we’ve got several things to address, and the penalties are at the top of that list.”
