Fire department advises fans to keep fire hydrants clear during March Madness festivities

March Madness and Fire Safety Reminder

March Madness is in full effect, and it’s already been a thrill ride. I mean, who could have predicted No. 9 TCU taking down No. 8 Ohio State in that first round on Thursday? That kind of matchup isn’t uncommon, but this year, there’s a notable trend: every No. 9 seed managed to beat their No. 8 competitor in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. Makes you wonder, doesn’t it?

While basketball fans were glued to their screens, the New York City Fire Department decided to inject some practicality into the chaos. They shared a not-so-subtle reminder about fire hydrant safety. I think it’s so easy to forget these important details when we’re caught up in all the excitement. But, as they pointed out, blocking fire hydrants is just not acceptable.

“It’s March Madness, and sure, let’s stop shootings, but blocking fire hydrants? Never okay,” they tweeted. They highlighted how vehicles parked too close to hydrants can really slow down emergency responders when every second counts. A reminder we probably all need now and then.

The FDNY pointed out that parking in front of a fire hydrant is illegal in New York City and can seriously delay first responders in urgent situations. Keeping hydrants clear is vital for firefighters to access water quickly in case of a blaze. It’s just common sense, right?

Interestingly, this campaign is not just about fire safety; it’s also about building connections between emergency services and the sports community. They are encouraging the public to show their appreciation for the NYPD as well, asking people to share videos expressing gratitude. St. John’s head coach Rick Pitino even chimed in, thanking everyone who contributes to maintaining safety in the city.

In a video posted online, he expressed heartfelt thanks to the NYPD for their hard work. It’s good to see these acknowledgments, especially before the Red Storm’s decisive 79-53 win against Northern Iowa in the NCAA Tournament.

It’s easy to get swept away by the highlight reel during March Madness, but it’s important to remember these little yet crucial details. So here’s to safe celebrations and maybe a victory or two on the court!
