FDNY Director Robert Tucker resigned on Wednesday, just hours after Zoran Mamdani from the Democratic Socialist Party was declared the winner of the New York City mayoral election.
Tucker submitted his resignation early Wednesday, following the announcement of Mamdani’s victory. A report by New York Daily News indicated that the fire chief decided to step down after the anti-Israel activist’s election.
In a message to Mayor Eric Adams, Tucker stated that December 19 would be his final day in the role, as revealed in an email to the newspaper.
“I will continue to lead the world’s best fire department and ensure a smooth transition,” Tucker expressed in a letter to Adams.
While the exact reasons for Tucker’s resignation weren’t immediately clear, some FDNY officials mentioned that he felt he might not align well with the incoming mayor and his team, according to the New York Daily News.
Mamdani, who openly identifies as a socialist and has previously dismissed calls for the terrorist group Hamas to cease its actions, is set to take the oath of office on January 1, 2026.
According to Adams administration sources, several other top aides, including Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Kaz Daughtry, are also planning to resign in the near future.
Daughtry, who previously served as a deputy commissioner with the NYPD, acts as a primary public safety advisor to Adams and acts as a key connector between the mayor’s office and the Trump administration.
Returning to his private security firm T&M, which he founded in 1999, is in Tucker’s plans. This detail was noted by the New York Post.
Tucker has been a longstanding member of the Board of Directors for the FDNY Foundation, the official non-profit organization associated with the FDNY, and has held a role as a Special Assistant in the Queens District Attorney’s Office in the past.
The fire chief is engaged in various philanthropic activities, including his role as the executive director of the FDNY Foundation, and has received recognition from organizations such as the New York City Board of Rabbis and Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City.
Tucker is expected to address his resignation details shortly.
Mamdani cinched the mayoral seat after large numbers of poor immigrants were brought into the city as part of an economic strategy aimed at increasing rents and lowering wages, managing to outpace former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) with 50% of the vote in the general election.
The election results indicate a rising influence of Democratic Socialists — Mamdani’s victory underscores a significant political shift in New York City.
Islamic advocates have expressed their enthusiasm over Mamdani’s success, including lawyer and journalist Qasim Rashid, who celebrated the fact that “American mayors are American Muslim immigrants.”
