Fire Engulfs Hong Kong Apartment Buildings, Death Toll Reaches 13 and Increasing

Massive Fire in Hong Kong Residential Complex

A significant fire broke out in a high-rise residential area of Hong Kong on Wednesday, resulting in at least 13 fatalities. Local news outlets suggest that many more individuals may still be trapped within the burning structures.

More than 700 firefighters were reportedly deployed to combat the blaze at Wang Fu Court, a complex that houses approximately 4,600 residents.

The Wang Fu Court consists of eight towers, each rising 31 stories high.

According to reports, the fire initially spread through the bamboo scaffolding of several apartments in the Tai Po district, an area in northern Hong Kong, before engulfing other sections of the buildings.

Witnesses described hearing loud crackling sounds from the burning bamboo, with thick smoke pouring from at least five of the eight buildings. Flames were seen reaching high into the sky.

“There’s nothing we can do about this site. We just pray that everyone, young and old, men and women, can return home safely,” commented Soh, a 57-year-old resident of Tai Po, while observing the scene.

“It’s heartbreaking. I’m really worried there are people trapped inside,” she added.

As night fell, the flames showed no signs of abating, casting an eerie orange glow on the surrounding buildings.

Reports from Hong Kong media indicate that police earlier mentioned receiving information about residents trapped within the structure. The fire has been classified as Level 5, the highest level of severity for fires in Hong Kong.
