Fire Near Dubai International Airport Linked to Drone Incident

On March 16, 2026, a significant fire broke out in the vicinity of Dubai International Airport due to what authorities described as a “drone-related incident.”

Flights were temporarily halted amidst the fire, but it has since been extinguished without any reported injuries, according to the Dubai Media Office. Some flights were redirected to nearby Al Maktoum International Airport, and operations have gradually resumed at Dubai International.

In response to the situation, authorities remarked on social media, stating that all necessary safety measures were being implemented. The California Post noted that this incident marks the third attack on the airport since tensions escalated between the U.S. and Iran.

Before the fire, the UAE’s air defense systems intercepted six ballistic missiles and 21 drones that were reportedly launched from Iran, as stated by the UAE Ministry of Defence (MOD). The MOD has detailed that 304 ballistic missiles, 15 cruise missiles, and 1,637 drones have been engaged by air defenses since the onset of the conflict.

The ongoing attacks have led to casualties, with seven fatalities in the UAE, including two military personnel. Additionally, reports indicate that 145 people sustained injuries, ranging from minor to serious.

On the same day, Fujairah, another city in the UAE, experienced a drone strike that resulted in a large fire, with smoke visible in the area. Fortunately, no injuries were reported at this site either, according to local media. This attack adds to previous strikes that have targeted the region.

Over the weekend, Iranian military officials advised civilians to avoid port cities in the UAE, labeling them as legitimate targets due to the presence of U.S. military forces. The Port of Fujairah, which is crucial for oil exports, remains the primary export route outside the Strait of Hormuz in the UAE.

Since the initiation of Operation Epic Fury—a U.S.-led military operation against Iran—traffic in the Strait of Hormuz has been significantly affected, raising concerns among global leaders as about a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas passes through this strait.
