Well, it seems that some firefighters had a rather dramatic response when a baseball landed on a pickup truck. In Maryland, the game was abruptly halted after heavy rain had already caused cancellations earlier. This was supposed to be a big moment for the university team.
The Thunderbolts of Silver Spring Tacoma had to call off their game when rain flooded their field at Montgomery Blair High School. The ball, hit over the fence, landed right at the fire station next door.
According to a local report, firefighters took to their hoses after the ball hit one of their vehicles. Coach Block Hunter told a news outlet about how the frustration boiled over.
“We’ve got nine other leagues playing here. It’s not just my guys hitting home runs,” said Dick O’Connor, the founder of the Thunderbolts, in a chat with another news source.
Apparently, there’s a common understanding that parking in that area can be risky, and a captain even acknowledged he shouldn’t have left his car there.
Aydan Drisco, an outfielder for the Thunderbolt team, recounted a funny moment. One of the players jokingly reminded the firefighters to be careful, saying, “Hey, take care, we don’t want you to get wet.” But shortly after, water gushed onto the diamond, seemingly out of nowhere.
“We just barely had a game, and then boom, there’s this massive spray,” Drisco said. “I’ve never seen anything like it during my baseball career.” They were really looking forward to playing after all the previous rain delays.
The game had already been shortened to seven innings but ultimately had to be postponed to Friday against an opposing team called Olney’s crop duster, as per social media updates.
The situation left a stark mark on the field, with “gallons of water” creating an awkward mess right in the middle of things.
The Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service later apologized for the unusual incident and mentioned they would work with local park police to find out what led to this flooding.
In a statement, they expressed regret over the disruption: “We understand how essential this location is for the community and young athletes excited for these games. We’ve had a long-standing relationship with the ballfield, and we recognize that events like this can significantly affect everyone’s experience.”
