Firefighters Rescue Golden Retriever from Icy Pond
In a courageous effort early on New Year’s Day, firefighters in Rhode Island rushed to save a golden retriever named Phoenix, who had fallen through thin ice into a frozen pond during a morning walk with his owner. The dramatic scene played out at Little Massachaug Pond, and images from the rescue captured the bravery of those involved.
According to reports, the incident happened just before 9 a.m. as Phoenix wandered onto the ice. Unfortunately, he fell into the freezing water, struggling to get back to safety while his owner watched helplessly from the shore.
Firefighters from various departments quickly responded upon receiving the call about a dog trapped in the icy waters. Clad in specialized ice rescue gear, the teams crawled over the precarious surface, and their commitment was evident as they made their way toward the struggling dog.
The Misquamicut Fire Department noted that additional help was requested from the Watch Hill Fire Department, which brought in crucial ice rescue equipment. Wearing bright orange and red gear, firefighters carefully navigated the unstable terrain as pieces of ice cracked beneath them.
Once they reached Phoenix, the firefighters worked quickly to bring him back to safety. Meanwhile, personnel set up an inflatable rescue boat on the shore in preparation for the operation. Thankfully, both Phoenix and the firefighters were safely retrieved, and everyone seemed to be in good spirits afterward.
Although some firefighters reported possible symptoms of hypothermia, they did not require any medical treatment. Social media soon buzzed with praise for the bravery and teamwork displayed during the rescue, illustrating how community members appreciated the dedication of first responders.
One commenter expressed gratitude, saying, “God bless you for saving that puppy. Respondents like you remind us that there is goodness and kindness.” Another added, “We are all so lucky to have such an amazing fire department and rescue team. Very lucky dog!”
Officials also took the opportunity to remind the public of the dangers associated with frozen bodies of water, stating, “Ice is never safe.” They emphasized that despite the extensive training firefighters undergo for such situations, the risks remain significant.
This operation marked the Misquamicut Fire Department’s first rescue of the new year, and they commended everyone involved for their swift actions and teamwork during the event.
