First homicide of 2024 happens mere moments into New Year’s Day

Chicago's first murder of the year occurred just after New Year's Day, as the Windy City continues to suffer from an increase in violent crime.

Chicago Police told Fox News that officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 7000 block of South Wabash Avenue early Monday morning. A 53-year-old man was shot “multiple times” and was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to FOX 32 Chicago: At least 19 bullet holes were observed at the crime scene.

“Police responded to an individual who had been shot and found three victims of gunshot wounds inside a residence,” a statement from the Chicago Police Department said.

Authorities later found a 49-year-old female victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. She was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she remains in critical condition.

Another female victim, 48, was found with an arm injury and was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital in stable condition.

“Further investigation revealed that the gunshot came from outside the home, traveled through a window and struck the victim,” police said in a statement. “No one is in custody and Area 1 detectives are conducting the investigation.”

Neighbors told FOX 32 it was a targeted shooting, but declined to be interviewed on camera due to safety concerns.

Fox News Digital reached out to the Chicago Police Department for more information, but no new details were obtained.
