The Bureau of Labor Statistics is set to release its employment report on Friday. This report holds significance as it’s the first since Donald Trump dismissed Labor Statistics Director Erica Mantelfer following a major revision of employment data.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) will deliver its first report on employment after Trump’s decision to fire the agency’s leader due to disappointing July data, as reported by The Hill. Economists anticipate that the labor market could show further weakness in August, which might provoke additional criticism from Trump.
Eji Antoni, the economist appointed by Trump to lead the BLS, has raised concerns about the data coming from the Bureau. In an early August interview, he discussed these issues with Fox News Digital.
In an interview with Fox Business, Antoni expressed doubts about the accuracy of the monthly employment reports. He suggested that the BLS should consider pausing its releases due to flaws in methodology and modeling. He indicated that the current data frequently exaggerates the state of employment, potentially misleading economic decision-makers from Washington to Wall Street.
He stated, “If you don’t know how many jobs are being added or lost in our economy, how are businesses supposed to plan?” Antoni believes the BLS should continue to publish quarterly data, even as they suspend monthly reports, since key decision-makers rely heavily on accurate information.
Trump has been vocal about the major revisions made by the BLS. He remarked in August that the job numbers seem to be skewed to favor Democrats, pointing to discrepancies following the 2024 presidential election, during which he alleged the numbers had been “stolen.” He noted a significant downward revision of over 818,000 jobs and expressed concern about Jerome Powell’s leadership while remaining optimistic about the country’s overall status.
