First Parliamentarian With Down Syndrome Elected In Spain

Spain has elected its first member of parliament with Down syndrome.

Advocate Mar Garceran, 45, is the first person with Down syndrome to become a member of parliament in Spain's history.

Mr. Garcellan's political achievements undoubtedly marked an important turning point and milestone for people with genetic disorders across Europe and even around the world, providing them with an opportunity to demonstrate their capacity for leadership and political success. .

Garcellan is also the first person with Down syndrome to become a national or regional parliamentarian in all of Europe.

The new MP told reporters his success was “unprecedented.”

“Society is beginning to recognize that people with Down syndrome have a lot to contribute,” Garcellan says.

The 45-year-old Spanish lawmaker began his career at the age of 18 as a member of the Conservative People's Party.

Garcelan's accomplishments followed in the footsteps of Ángela Basirer. Bashirer became the first person with Down syndrome to be elected to Spain's Valladolid City Council in 2013.
