As the NFL Draft nears, fans are gearing up for the moment teams will choose their future stars. Draft day is significant; it symbolizes the dreams of many young athletes coming to life.
However, I’d like to shift focus. While the NFL Draft is packed with memorable moments, it also features some genuinely funny stories that are worth sharing.
Here are five of the most amusing moments from recent drafts, ranging from dog shenanigans to some comical mishaps.
5. Mel Kiper’s Shedule Sanders Outburst (2025)
At first glance, this was a bit more awkward than amusing, but it’s downright hilarious in retrospect. Mel Kiper is known for critiquing quarterbacks harshly during the draft (just ask Jimmy Clausen), but there’s really no shame in misjudging someone now and then.
After being in the field long enough, everyone has some skewed opinions. Yet, Kiper passionately argued that the NFL’s evaluation of quarterbacks has been flawed for decades, despite having predicted Clausen would be out of the league sooner than he was (five years, in fact). Kiper’s passionate rants even led to him debating with host Rece Davis—a rare moment for a usually composed figure.
It seems Shedule Sanders may have landed in the right spot—I mean, he doesn’t need to fear retirement if he becomes a Pro Bowl-attending quarterback.
4. Eagles Fans Booing McNabb
Philadelphia Eagles fans are infamous for their intense dedication—sometimes bordering on madness. It’s one thing to be passionate, but booing a player right after your team drafts him? That’s a bit much.
Such was the case when the Eagles picked quarterback Donovan McNabb second overall in the 1999 draft, while fans were clamoring for running back Ricky Williams. In hindsight, this choice was pretty humorous.
Sure, Williams had his successes, earning All-Pro status in 2002, but McNabb went on to become a six-time Pro Bowler and nearly led the Eagles to their first Super Bowl win. It turns out fans can sometimes be, well, misguided.
3. Belichick’s Dog Takes Charge
The 2020 NFL Draft was unique due to the pandemic, which led to some memorable comedy moments. Among them, Bill Belichick’s dog charmingly controlled the “virtual” draft proceedings.
For a little while, while Belichick was away, his dog, Mike, was humorously placed at his computer with a name tag showing part of Belichick’s name. It certainly captured the oddness of that year’s draft.
It was quite a surreal moment—definitely something that seemed hard to believe at the time.
2. Vikings’ Long Wait
Nowadays, teams don’t typically use all their time to decide in the first round of the draft; they’ve usually got a clear plan. But back in 2003, the Minnesota Vikings were in an unusual situation.
After stalling for what felt like an eternity during their selection process, they became the first team in NFL history to lose a draft pick because of their indecisiveness after 15 minutes of deliberation.
Ironically, they still turned out okay, choosing defensive tackle Kevin Williams ninth overall, who became a five-time All-Pro. Sometimes, taking your time can lead to unexpected successes.
1. Tunsil’s Shocking Draft Night
This story is unsurprisingly number one. Laremy Tunsil, originally anticipated to be a top-five pick in 2016, faced a major setback just an hour before the draft when a video surfaced showing him using a homemade smoking device.
This incident caused him to fall to the 13th pick, where the Miami Dolphins happily accepted the opportunity. Tunsil later claimed his account was hacked, even showing a text asking for rental assistance.
Despite the rocky start, Tunsil has indeed thrived in the NFL, achieving five Pro Bowl selections. Yet, when people think of Tunsil, his unforgettable misstep tends to come to mind first.
