Five Ordinary Individuals Who Changed the Game Against Armed Robbers in 2025

It’s truly remarkable to see ordinary individuals stand up to potential threats, especially when they find themselves facing armed criminals. Some of these situations even take unexpected turns where the victims manage to regain control.

In 2025, several stories highlighted instances like these. For example, there was a garbage truck driver who confronted two would-be robbers and came out on top. Another story involved five armed intruders who broke into a California house, only to encounter a homeowner ready to fight back. Then, there was the case of a man in West Hollywood, where a thief aimed for his Rolex, but unfortunately for the crook, the man turned out to be a retired wrestler. Talk about picking the wrong target!

Here’s a glimpse of the top five stories showcasing everyday heroes battling armed criminals.

Home invasion victim fights off armed robbers with deadly results

A home invasion in Houston turned dire on April 9. The victim was engaged in a struggle with an armed robber when he managed to wrestle the weapon away and, tragically, shot the intruder, who later died from his injuries.

Police reported that three robbers targeted an apartment near NRG Stadium around 9 p.m. One masked man knocked on the door while others attempted to enter via a window. Fortunately, the residents called 911 beforehand.

During the confrontation, one robber aimed a gun at two tenants, leading to a struggle in which one tenant secured the gun. Despite the robber producing a second firearm, the 20-year-old resident overpowered him and shot him.

The police confirmed that the two other robbers escaped before authorities arrived, with an 18-year-old identified as the deceased intruder. Charges against the homeowner are currently pending as the case is under review.

Garbage truck driver turns the tables on armed robbers

In late January, a garbage truck driver in Chicago became an unwitting hero. After being approached by two armed robbers demanding his belongings, he responded differently than they expected.

The police reported that around 5:15 a.m. near the 900 block of South Homan Avenue, the driver, who possessed a concealed carry permit, engaged in a gunfight with the robbers. One of them was shot in the head and died at the scene, while the other, aged 20, suffered a neck injury and was critically hospitalized.

Miraculously, the driver emerged from the encounter unharmed and was evaluated at a nearby hospital.

Retired wrestler fends off armed thug

In a surprising twist, a man in West Hollywood had a gun pointed at him for his Rolex, only for the assailant to discover that his target was a retired wrestler.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the incident unfolded near 1 p.m. on October 22. A dark sedan approached the victim, and a masked man jumped out with a gun, demanding the watch. However, a physical altercation broke out.

Witness Patrick McCloskey shared his perspective: hearing a woman scream, he rushed outside. The retired wrestler managed to take control, subduing the gunman until police arrived.

Interestingly, during the struggle, a second suspect got out of the vehicle but escaped the scene. Officers later retrieved the weapon and took one assailant into custody.

Homeowner with gun fights off five armed intruders

In March, a homeowner in Los Banos, California faced off against five armed invaders. When they broke into his home, he also grabbed his firearm, leading to a deadly encounter.

Police Chief Ray Reyna stated that the homeowner approached the intruders with his legal firearm, resulting in a shootout in which two assailants were killed. Thankfully, no one inside the home was harmed, and law enforcement is currently looking for the remaining suspects.

Thug chooses the wrong victim in an altercation

In an unusual turn of events, a suspect in Vernon, New York aimed a weapon at two victims on December 1. As the victims attempted to escape, a struggle ensued.

The authorities reported that one victim managed to seize the weapon from the attacker, leading to that individual’s arrest without any complications.

Identified as Glenn A. Wallis, 40, he faced multiple charges, including criminal possession of a weapon, as the firearm was revealed to be a pellet gun.
