Wide Receiver Calvin Russell III Chooses Not to Sign with Syracuse

The mood around Syracuse might be a bit down after five-star recruit Calvin Russell III opted not to sign with them on Wednesday.

The Miami Northwestern wide receiver made the announcement at his school’s signing event, though he didn’t provide specific reasons for his decision.

“It’s been a tough couple of days,” Russell shared, expressing gratitude towards those who supported him. “I’ve been considering this for a while, but I ultimately chose not to sign today.”

His agent later suggested that Russell felt he needed more time, stating that he wanted to “pray” over his final decision.

In the update, the agent emphasized that Russell has a strong admiration for Syracuse’s head coach Fran Brown and is genuinely interested in the Orange football program. However, he wants to ensure that he is completely confident in his choice before signing by the end of the week.

Interestingly, some reports hint at other underlying factors influencing Russell’s choice.

A video from his Instagram Live during the event showed him making the “U” sign associated with the University of Miami.

Before his verbal commitment to Syracuse back in July, Miami and Michigan were considered major contenders for Russell’s signature.

The early signing period runs from Wednesday through Friday.

Coach Brown appeared unfazed by the news and remained optimistic about the program’s prospects with Russell.

“There could be various reasons involved,” Brown remarked. “I just know we’ve built a strong relationship. There’s genuine affection both ways. I’m confident in myself, in what we’re building here, and I believe in the program.”

Russell was anticipated to be Syracuse’s most notable commitment in over two decades.
